Londoners Who Leave Behind Their Dog's Poop Are Now Being Traced With DNA

by N/A, 9 years ago | 2 min read

Stepping in dog poop is not something anybody ever plans on doing, but often this crime is bestowed upon unsuspecting pedestrians of public areas. For dogs, the world is their restroom and they know no different. They know nothing of the horror they can potentially leave upon a person's sole and subsequently their soul. Dogs simply do their duty and move on with their lives.

The retrieval and disposal of dog dookie is left in the hands of their owners, which becomes a problem.

The problem is, humans are inherently lazy and picking up fecal matter isn't something anybody likes to do. However, in areas of heavy foot traffic, it's just something that has to be done–out of respect.

Well, the minds in London have taken the matter of dog deuce into their hands to be sure dog owners' hands are doing what should be. The idea? Tracing left behind wastes from a dog back to their registered DNA and thus finding the culprit of public poo leftovers: the owner.

Council officials in Dagenham and (ironically enough) Barking, suburbs of London, started the process of dog DNA samples, by making owners register their dogs last year.

Now, the registered dogs DNA can be cross checked with owners to find out who's left what behind from a dog's behind. Here's how I look at it, personally: leaving behind your dog's droppings is no different than littering, so making people responsible for these actions should be held accountable in the same way.

The whole operation is being run by an organization known as PooPrints, a dog DNA specialist firm of sorts.

This coming April, in London, microchipping of dogs will be a lawful requirement, thus the DNA record. This will presumably cut down on the left behind pup poop, and they can see that anything left behind is simply from unregistered, stray dogs.

Basically, London is cracking down on dog poop riddling its public areas, but if you need a law to make you just be a decent person, maybe there's something wrong with you. Just do what's right:
