Some people need attention desperately, and they'll do whatever it takes to get it.
"Hey, do you notice me yet?"
"Well, would you notice me if I got tattoos on my eyeballs?"
"Yes, you would."
"I'm really cool and live such an idiosyncratic life."

"Do you think I'm interesting yet?"
"Please give me the attention I desperately crave and try to receive by doing something "unique.""
"I have no talent or otherwise legitimate way of garnering attention for myself..."
"...so I'll just go ahead and tattoo my eyeballs, hope that you stare, and then definitely take great issue with the fact that you're staring at me because I don't fit your definition of 'normal.'"
