A team of scientists has finally caught video footage of the Omura's whale.

They have often been confused for Bryde’s whales which have a similar appearance. They were only identified as a species in 2003.

A team from New England Aquarium and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution caught the rare video in the Indian Ocean, off the island of Madagascar.

The team was led by Salvatore Cerchio, who plans to return to the area to study the whales' vocalizations, behavior and population characteristics.

They’re part of the group of whales called rorquals which included the blue whale.

They’re considered small whales since they measure between 10 and 11.5 meters. Not much is known about them because most recently, they were only seen when they were found beached in Australia and Japan.

Check out this video to see the whale for yourself.
