For more information you can check out this Pop vs Soda project by Alan McConchie.

The website, Pop vs Soda, allows you to take a survey to answer what generic word you use when asking for a soft drink. Alan McConchie has been using this as a way to measure who says what and where people are from. According to data collected he found about 75% of Californians say "soda" when asking for a soft drink.
