"Grill" might be a bit of a stretch, but this much is true—the Maya were not strangers to the idea of ornately decorated teeth.Â
Along with the many other cultural and architectural feats that the Maya accomplished and brought into the world, they invented dentistry!

But it didn't involve scheduling a cleaning or a root canal...

Mayan dentists had the job of filling the teeth of their patients with gemstones.

It was incredibly difficult work, involving a lot of precision, but the results were pretty amazing, especially when you think about the time period.

Surprisingly enough, gemstone teeth fillings were not specific to royal or high classes of Mayan society. Citizens from all classes had their teeth filled with gemstones!
